My Friend Who Doesn’t Believe In God

I talked to a friend of mine yesterday. He has a religion, but I’d rather not mention what his religion is. He had told me before that he’s not practicing his religion, but only yesterday I found out that he doesn’t believe in the hereafter. Meaning-he doesn’t believe there’s heaven and hell, and he believes that when people die, life ends. That’s it.

I was dismayed to be honest. Its common to know those who don’t believe in God. But to know that there’s people who believes there’s no judgment after death is simply staggering to me.
So then the chat continues. He believes that whoever committed sins/wrongdoer and gets away from being arrested or being punish in this world is simply lucky. That’s it.

And he even said that he thinks people who told themselves “those wrongdoer that got away from being punish in this world will be punished in the hereafter” is simply making themselves assured that the wrongdoer will somehow be punished even not in this world. In which people connoted this to comfort them. As people by nature are incline to accept the fact that the sinners are not going to be punished in the hereafter. That’s it. That’s his theory.

I do still respect him as a friend. Infact, although he said he’s not practicing his religion, but he walks almost exactly what God commanded people to do. He said, its simply a moral of a person to act good or bad. Not because he knows there’s someone judging him, but he knows what will make him feel good or guilty after performing an action.

But that’s the whole point doesn’t it? In contrary, the reason why people feel satisfied or guilty after doing something is because there’s right and wrong in doing things. And what insinuates the right and wrong is simply because there’s a measurement or a weightage for the action. And from this right and wrong will then shows the result. From this result, a reward or penalty will come into picture. That’s a simple fact. A simple convention in our life. Just like the entailing ying and yang concept about all forces are interconnected and interdependent in the natural world.

I didn’t argue with him much. As I said, from knowing him, he is naturally a good person practicing the acts of what a religion requires from the followers. He’s just not aware of it. I told him, in Islam too, God never anticipated that ONLY MUSLIM is granted to go to heaven. Having a religion is not a ticket to heaven.There are a lot more than just having our religion printed in our birth certificates. More than just believing. More than just having faith. It’s a lot more that that.

God knows. God sees.

And I wont be surprised if somehow he’ll end up in heaven after he dies.

I told him although he doesn’t believe in hell and heaven, but I will see him in the hereafter after he dies and be the person to say “ I told you so”.
At least he has something to look forward to when he dies than believing nothing happens.
